Jason Winegar is entering 3rd season as the Thundering Herd Assistant Tennis Coach. He was hired as assistant tennis coach in August 2017, just prior to the start of the 2017-18 season.
Winegar comes to the Herd following a very successful and varied coaching career. His coaching career began in Midland, Mich., helping to establish the Midland Tennis Academy before progressing to running his own highly-successful performance program, The LTA Elite Academy, based out of the Lincolnshire Tennis Club in the greater Chicago area. Winegar later became a private coach, taking one of his players to a top 100 world ranking.
Winegar has a wealth of experience and success coaching all levels of the game. He has helped dozens of junior players obtain college scholarships. His coaching has taken him all around the world to Europe, South America, Africa and Central America, as well as North America. Winegar has had the privilege of coaching players at the junior championships of three of the four Grand Slam events (Wimbledon, US Open, French Open).
Most recently prior to starting at Marshall Winegar served as a volunteer assistant coach at the University of Texas. During his time in Austin, the Longhorns reached the semifinals of the Big 12 tournament and reached the round of 32 at the NCAA tournament. While at Texas, Winegar also coached several young American professionals on the ITA Futures and Challenger circuits.
Winegar serves as Assistant Coach under Head Coach John Mercer. Coach Mercer is in his 32nd year coaching at the NCAA Division I level and his 17th at the helm of the Thundering Herd tennis team. He is the all time winningest coach in Marshall history with 246. He has led the Herd to double-digit wins in all but 2 seasons as Head Coach.
Marshall, founded in 1837, is a public university. Programs are offered through the Colleges of Business, Education and Human Services, Fine Arts, Information Technology and Engineering, Liberal Arts, Nursing and Health Professions, and Science; the Schools of Extended Education, Journalism and Mass Communications, and Medicine; the Community and Technical College; and the Graduate School. Its 70-acre campus is located in Huntington, 50 miles west of Charleston.
