Paige Madara took over the Grinnell College tennis teams after playing for and coaching highly-successful programs.
Madara led the 2018 Pioneer men's squad to its 15th Midwest Conference title in a row, as well as the league tourney crown and spot in the NCAA Division III National Tournament. Grinnell stretched its MWC winning streak to 89 matches while winning 145 in a row against all league foes, dating back to 2003. Grinnell finished its season at 8-0 in the MWC and 23-5 overall while earning MWC Coach of the Year honors.
Madara also had success from the start as Grinnell's women's coach. She guided the Pioneers to two consecutive MWC titles as the team qualified for the NCAA Division III National Tournament. The Pioneers set a school record for wins in 2017-18 with 20 and achieved their first regional ranking since 2014.
Madara played collegiately at Washington University in St. Louis, which boasts tennis programs that are consistently among the best at the NCAA Division III level.
She then served as the assistant women’s coach for the Bears from 2013 through 2015, followed by a move to Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Va., where she was the assistant women’s coach.
Grinnell College, founded in 1846, is a private, liberal arts college. It may at first appear indistinguishable from other acclaimed liberal arts colleges, but like the students it attracts, Grinnell is marked by an unusual blend of academic rigor, individualism, innovation, informality and social justice. Free from core requirements, students design their academic programs in engaged consultation with faculty advisors. Grinnellians feel empowered in and out of the classroom. Furthermore, residential life is largely self-governed. Student opinions are not only heard, but valued. Students from 50 states and 47 countries make Grinnell a cosmopolitan haven in America's heartland. Its 95-acre campus is located in Grinnell, 55 miles east of Des Moines.
